Description

Some frightening photography ideas to try out this Halloween.

Categories: Photo Ideas , Halloween

What you'll need:

  • digital camera
  • willing subjects

How to make it:

  • 1.

    Ghostly Images

To make your subject appear transparent and ghostly, set your camera exposure to a longer amount of time, like 8 seconds. When you take the shot, count out loud and have your subject duck out of the picture early, like at 5 seconds if your set to 8. Shooting the pictures at dusk will help keep the images from being blown out because you need a darker setting to avoid overexposure.

  • 2.

    Double Exposures

Using the same technique of a long camera exposure, have your subject move to a different spot half way through the exposure instead of leaving the frame completely. Then their image will be repeated in the same picture.

  • 3.

    Create an Eerrie Scene

For a scarier effect, shoot in black and white mode or desaturate the color image in a photo editing tool afterwards. Black and white photos create a feeling of timelessness and mystery. Try dressing your subjects in vintage clothing like top hats and old white dresses. Add scary props like an ax to complete the frightening scene.

This is too cool! I can't wait to try it out.

I love this. It'd also be really interesting to create some spooky effects or ghost orbs using Light Drawing techniques. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_painting

how do you get the ghosts to look so clear? in my photos you can see the movement of us getting out of the way

This is suppose to be so easy, but I have no clue where to begin on my Easy Share Z740 Camera. Supposedly, my camera is outdated, so there is no support from Kodak...Great!

Deborah, what part are you having problems with? I'd be happy to help if I can.

I think this is very cool! I LOVE this idea, but i have no idea how to do it. Should we duck out of the picture slowly, quickly, or normally? Like jdiridoni, the movements are very clear, and I can't figure out how to do most of these suggestions! I have tried experimenting and I'm just so confused...could somebody help me please??

I think the key is to set your camera up on a tripod or on a tabletop. You'll need stability for a clear photo. Set a long exposure - the poster recommended 8 seconds.
Have your subject duck out very quickly at 5 seconds.
I think if you can see the movement, your exposure isn't long enough.

Yes, the key is to duck, jump and roll out of the shot as quickly as possible!

you can do this with any camera. If you don't have a digital camera then just move the camera right as you snap the shutter. With the digital camera just set you camera to a slow shuter speed and have your subject move around. I done this with my son and i have him looking like his is demond or something coming off my couch.

I'm 11 years old, and I LOVE (I mean LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!) taking videos and pictures! I REALLY wish I could do this kind of picture, but I have a Kodak ZI8 camera, so I can't.

Hi Spiral101
The Zi8 is primarily a video camera. You can certainly do very cool things with video to get spooky effects. Once you've shot your video you can print a still picture from a frame at Kodak kiosks.

For a traditional still picture like this you will need a still camera.
